Renaissance Award, Arkadelphia Schools, Arkansas. This team’s performance was Heavenly! Their set-up was an intricately choreographed stomp routine. They created a “Plumber’s Bell Set” with copper pipes, hand-cut to specific lengths using precise mathematical relationships among intervals on an octave. Their expansive set even included an “Electro-light bulb” powered by salt water. They left the audience and appraisers on Cloud Nine!

Renaissance Award, Maharishi Team Gold, Iowa. This team took the challenge of designing a technical modement to make sound above and beyond. A motorized corkscrew that rotated three dowels, each connected to separate disks that used a piston style configuration to convert angular momentum into linear movement. This motion was used to rotate three dimmers up and down. This created a warbling sound from a radio. Now, if you can understand any of that, you can understand why this team should win this award. And we won’t even tell you about the suspension cage!

Secondary; 1st Place; DaVinci Award, Hudson High School, Wisconsin. This team took great risk by scanning seven different radio stations to tell one cohesive story. Their eccentric character, Static, continually turned the Radio dial, causing it to land on a variety of radio shows, ranging from Gospel to talk shows to rock. The Radio itself was a large structure with a working dial which manipulated a complicated pulley system to change the stations. This clever performance kept us tuned in and turned on.

University Level, 2nd Place: University of Texas at Dallas, Richardson, Texas. DaVinci Award: From the moment this team walked into their task-based Instant Challenge, their thinking was nowhere near the box. They demonstrated creative problem solving in the extreme. Their solution was unforgettable!

University Level, 1st Place: Texas A&M University, Terrell, Texas. DaVinci Award: We couldn’t believe our eyes when this team brought in two ten foot towers and placed them in the middle of the stage. But we were totally blown away when they extended these towers six more feet and two university students climbed up into the second story. Their courage to design and use this amazing station clearly deserves a DaVinci award!
