Renaissance Award, Open Window School, Washington. This team used exceptional innovation in use of materials to build a set of percussion instruments. From paper cups stuffed inside a cookie tin to a bundle of silverware in a cardboard box, this team knew how to build a drum set and play it perfectly. Close your eyes and you are at a concert.
Renaissance Award, Hearst Elementary School, California. Each member of our appraiser team was thoroughly amazed by the wonderful set, props and costumes of this team’s presentation. We caught our breath as the team unfolded a backdrop revealing a large mosaic of a colorful rainforest made from tiny paint chips. They made bird wings that opened magically using a pulley system and a tree of leaves made from hundreds of Ande’s mint wrappers. Creative use of materials, along with impeccable artistic talent, enhanced an ecological theme and made this performance unforgettable.
Middle Level, 3rd Place: Londonderry Middle School, Londonderry, New Hampshire.
1st Place; Renaissance Award: Gleason Lake Elementary School – Sticky Brainiacs, Minnesota. The design and construction of the inkball packaging machine was truly elegant. The sequencing of the numerous steps, such as marbles traveling through mazes which operate a mousetrap, which turns over a cup, which lands in a carton on a toy car, which rolls down a track, which closes the carton, thereby completing the task. Each step was designed to that the overall process was clean, sharp and robust.
DaVinci Award, Jasper, Indiana. The original device created by the team was the most unique of the tournament. The team worked together to take an often discarded household machine, reverse it , and put it to a whole new use. The dual plumbing and message system creativity changed an exercise bicycle into a pneumatic vacuum pump that effectively worked its purpose.
DaVinci Award, Glacier Creek Middle, Wisconsin.This team initially presented a seemingly simple solution made up of nothing more than their costumes and a box. However, this team quickly surprised the appraisers by showing they could think outside the box when their scenery unfolded, presenting a whole new universe. This ingenious display went over with a bang! Never did the appraisers imagine a simple black box could encompass enormous scenery and a technical device. This unfolding scenery stunned the audience and showed brilliant creativity at work.
