Secondary Level, 2nd Place: John Handley High School, Winchester, Virginia.Renaissance Award: The Appraisers were impressed by this team’s impeccable sense of mechanical detail. Belts, pulleys and motors set off a wood chopper, a water wheel, waves and jumping fish, as well as twirling dancers in a cuckoo clock. This mechanical marvel was a true work of art.

Renaissance Award, Piedmont & Head-Royce, California.This team gained a thorough understanding of clockmaking. They cut their own wooden gears, coated the teeth of a gear wheel with metal and filed these to precision with over 500 hours of meticulous work. The result was an amazing working clock!

DaVinci Award: Francis W Parker Charter Essential School, Massachusetts. This team chose a risky topic about personal freedom. From beginning to end , the script , the backdrop and technical devices were of exceptional quality and seamlessly integrated to tell the story. Symbolism was used through their presentation, both verbally and visually to complement each other. Their use of sign language during their performance and afterward while talking with the appraisers accentuated their theme, as did the ways in which their simply elegant and efficient technical device functioned. The skillful blend of all element was exceptionally creative and noteworthy.
